Does filtering vodka make it taste better?
We all know the myth, filtering cheap vodka through a Brita filter is supposed to make it taste as good as expensive vodka. Most serious scientists are off finding cures for cancer and stuff. So it is up to us lowly, liberal-arts educated commoners to solve this perplexing mystery.
Materials:
Originally, we wanted a double blind study. Unfortunately, that would have meant that the person administering the test didn't know which bottle contained which vodka (they would have labels like A,B,C), which would have meant that he couldn't sample some during the tests. We did manage a blind study though, by having everyone out of the room except for me as the administrator during the pouring.
To make the filtered vodka, we poured the Burnetts into the Brita filter, then poured the results of this filtering back into the filter 7 times. In other words, we filtered it 7 times.
I poured a little vodka from each bottle into the shot glasses I chose. Each contestant then came into the room one at at time, got a piece or two of lime, and then drank the shots in any order they chose (I recorded the choosing order as well). After each shot they chewed on the lime to help restore their taste. After all three shots they pointed to their favorite shot, and their least favorite shot (I used my impressive powers of deduction to figure out the third). The shots were simply labeled 1,2,3 so they had no idea which shot glass contained which vodka.
Then they left the room, and I washed each shot glass, shaking out any water left in it. Then I urinated into it, because I hate you all. Finally I re-set up the experiment for the next contestant. I made sure to mix up the shot glasses a little to ensure it wasn't just one glass that the contestants liked.
Hypothesis:
We think the filtered cheap vodka will score more favorites than the unfiltered, and score at least as many favorites as the expensive vodka.
Data:
Trial One:
I recorded both the order each contestant drank in as well as their favorite. For trial one, the vodkas were:
For each contestant, their chosen favorites are on the top part of their row, and the order they drank in is on the bottom. The order the contestants participated is the order they are in the table
Trial Two:
Trial 3:
By this trial we had used up all of our Grey Goose, so we did a lightning round of just the Burnetts filtered vs unfiltered:
Conclusion:
It looks like the filtered vodka was somewhat prefered over the other two. We don't have enough data to make this statement conclusive. The order that the contestants drank in seemed to have an effect on the outcome. Some other things that we might have learned are:
Materials:
- Bottle of Burnetts vodka (in glass bottle, not plastic)
- Bottle of Grey Goose (unflavored)
- Brita water filter, with new filter that has not been used with water yet (and never will be now)
- Five willing contestants
- Three shot glasses
- Limes

- After a few drinks you can't tell the difference anyway, just order the cheap
- The family hates frenchies (everyone picked grey goose as their least favorite in trial one)
- Matt is living the fight club dream (picked the unfiltered as his favorite twice)
- Vodka should not be studied it should be enjoyed.
