I met Paul Farmer yesterday.
If you don’t know all about him already you can read tracy kidder's somewhat poorly written biography. Paul was amazing. We held hands and talked while Infectious Disease doctors buzzed around our conversation like locus unable to penetrate the invisible barrier created by our chemistry. As I looked at him I told him in my softest most feminate voice, "Paul, you are my inspiration". The CEO and president of Duke hospitals, stood next to me smirking (but he was Asian so it didn't matter). Then Paul looked at me as I look into him and said "thank you"; It was amazing. Then I was like "OhmyGod." and shook the presidents hand with sweaty palms and I walked to my seat. Paul spoke soon afterwards about the "effector hand" of vernable service, the role of the research institution, and his work in Rwanda. Oh, and he signed my copy of his book.
The coolest part was I realized soon afterwards that I will be far greater and more powerful than Paul in a very short amount of time. I should have offered him a job.
